JEE Main 2026 Photo FAQ — 40 KB Limit, Compression & Rejection Fixes

Why does JEE Main have such a strict 40 KB limit?

JEE Main (NTA) has had a 40 KB photo limit for years. The limit was set for legacy portal infrastructure. It is the strictest limit of any major national exam — NEET allows 200 KB and UPSC allows 300 KB. Many students are caught off guard because 40 KB is tiny by modern camera standards. A fresh phone photo is 4–8 MB, which is 100–200× too large.

How do I compress a photo to 40 KB without losing quality?

Use PhotoFit: go to the Compress tab, upload your photo, type 38 (not 40) in the KB field, and download. Aiming for 38 KB gives you a 2 KB buffer against rounding differences. The photo will look identical at 38 KB vs the original for identity verification purposes.

What are the JEE Main 2026 photo pixel dimensions?

The NTA portal requires a 3.5×4.5 cm photo. At 300 DPI (the standard for prints), this is approximately 413×531 pixels. At 100 DPI (screen resolution), this is 138×177 pixels. Most portals accept the print-size version (413×531 px or close to it). Use PhotoFit's Resize tool to crop and resize to these dimensions before compressing.

JEE Main rejected my photo even at 35 KB — what should I check?

Four things: (1) Is the format JPEG? The portal does not accept PNG or HEIC. (2) Is the background pure white? Even a slightly coloured or grey background can cause rejection. (3) Is the photo within 3 months? Older photos may be flagged during verification. (4) Is your face clearly visible with eyes open and no glasses?

Is there a separate KB limit for the JEE Main signature?

Yes. The signature image limit is 4–30 KB — even tighter than the photo. Upload your signature scanned or photographed on white paper, then use PhotoFit to compress it to 25 KB.
